This shrub to small tree is native from southern Europe to northern India but has naturalized in the Mediterranean. In his Garden Book Thomas Jefferson documented a row of pomegranates that were planted in the south slope of Monticello in 1769. Although they can reliably flower in Virginia, fruit is rare. Pomegranates prefer climates with long, hot dry summers. They are well suited to container growing.
